Health, Sport & Leisure

The Vision

By the year 2011, the people living in New Cross Gate will enjoy improved health and well-being. We will also work towards equal access to connected comprehensive and culturally sensitive local health, leisure and social services.

In simple terms, this means that the NDC programme is trying to help local people to feel healthier and stay healthier. One of the main ways of doing this is to ensure that local people are able to make the most of local, good quality services, such as the Doctors Surgery or pharmacy.

Achieving the Vision

New Cross Gate NDC is working with a wide range of partners in order to promote healthy lifestyle opportunities for the benefit of local people. It funds a wide range of projects and works closely with local community-based organisations such as African Community Partnership (ACP)and larger borough-wide agencies like Lewisham Primary Care Trust (PCT) with the aim of improving the health of local people.

What has happened so far?

So far, the NDC has directly funded about 20 local projects under the 'Health Theme'. For more details about the current projects see Project List. They are all locally based and have been developed to tackle a wide range of health and social issues. For example, there are two projects which focus directly on improving the sexual health of local young people – they are run by the PCT (the Knowledge is Power Project) and by Brook London (the Peer Mentoring project). Other examples are the projects with a physical activity or sport focus, such as the football and multi-sports activities run by Millwall Community Scheme, the watersports programme at The Ahoy Centre, and the table tennis clubs managed by the Greenhouse project.

What else is happening?

Health is a big focus for the new exciting NDC Centre development. The new building will include a state-of-the-art GP Surgery, space for a new pharmacy, a great new gym and leisure facility, as well as extra community space for activities like yoga, Pilates, etc. For more details of what the NDC centre will look like and what will be in it see Capital Programme.

There are lots of other partnerships developing which are aimed at tackling specific local health problems, such as a joint initiative to cut smoking rates, a project with Age Concern aimed at helping local older people stay healthy, another Community Health Fair which brings people and projects together under one roof, and a joint local project tackling the issue of high blood pressure.

Future plans

Many of the projects shown on this website are working out ways of keeping at least some of their activities going. For example, a group of local residents have formed JOY (Just Older Youth) to look at ways of making sure the activities such as line dancing and T’ai Chi currently provided by the LOOP Team, can carry on. The AHOY project is looking to keep local people involved by encouraging them to become active volunteers. The Health Access Project (HAP) has just been successful in applying for extra funding from the Pfizer Foundation.
