Employment & EnterpriseThe VisionNew Cross Gate will be a vibrant, thriving place with a sustainable and diverse economy with jobs and training opportunities for local people, particularly the most disadvantaged. In simple terms, this means that the NDC is looking at ways of helping local people make the most of training opportunities and help them to get into work. It is also seeking to help local businesses develop and to attract new enterprises into the area. Achieving the VisionNew Cross Gate NDC is working with a wide range of partners in order to offer a wide-reaching programme of training courses along with specific support to help people into employment. It is currently funding projects which are offering new, locally-based training courses and also direct support for people looking for work. What has happened so far?So far, the NDC has directly funded a number of local projects under the 'Employment & Enterprise Theme'. For more details about the current projects see Project List. They are all locally based and have been developed to tackle a wide range of employment issues. For example, there are two projects which focus directly on improving the range of training opportunities available to local people (the Tap into Learning Project), as well as providing face-to-face employment advice and guidance (The 170 Works Project). What else is happening? There are lots of partnerships developing which are aimed at tackling specific local employment issues. For example, the 170 Works project have linked up with the Employer Engagement Team at Jobcentre Plus to make sure the latest job vacancies are advertised locally as soon as they are available. We are also working with colleagues in Lewisham Council to make sure that we get the maximum benefit out of the job and training opportunities to come out of the East London Line Extension and the new train depot in New Cross Gate. Future plansThere are a number of smaller-scale initiatives happening locally that are looking to encourage more 'social enterprise' activities in the New Cross Gate area. One example is 'Escape' who have developed a programme to help people get back into work or to identify their training needs. There will also be a wide range of opportunities for employment and enterprise once the NDC Centre development starts being built.
