Primary schools collaborative
The Primary Schools Collaborative targets NDC pupils at 5 schools: Monson, Kender, St. James, Childeric and Edmund Waller. The programme has added excellent value so far providing community workers, a speech and language therapist (and extra teaching assistants at Monson).
Going forward, with the support of staff, Roy Broadfield and the NDC, we are working together to involve parents in their childrens’ learning. Last term many parents attended workshops at Monson to support their children with their maths and literacy. This term we will be working to develop childrens’ enthusiasm and knowledge for science. Initially we will be running workshops for parents of children who are in Reception and Year 1. The children work together with their parents and are given resources so children can learn at home. In previous activities, this has proven interesting and fun for all involved!
Karate Club
One of the most successful karate clubs in Lewisham is run every Friday afternoon. The children at this club took part in the recent NDC Literacy Festival presenting a fantastic exhibition of Karate under the guidance of their coach. Children from the age of six are learning self discipline and control, which is needed to be successful at karate, as well as being an essential life skill.
Breakfast Club
The Breakfast Club continues to be a great success. A recent questionnaire indicated that the children enjoy the activities and the food .They also came up with ideas of how to improve the club. Presently the club starts at 8.00am for breakfast and then the children move straight into activities. Breakfast club is run by James, Debbie and Joan, who provide the children with a very positive and nutritious start to the day.
