Education & Skills

The Vision

There will be a positive culture of education in New Cross Gate, promoting lifelong learning within the local community.

The NDC programme is trying to help local people achieve their goals and aspirations. One of the main ways of doing this is to ensure that local people are able to access improved education services, such as family learning, school based learning, and adult education and training.

Achieving the Vision

New Cross Gate NDC is working with a wide range of partners in order to promote educational opportunities for the benefit of local people.  It funds a wide range of projects and works closely with local community-based organisations such as 170 Community Organisation, African Community Partnership (ACP) and larger agencies like Lewisham College with the aim of improving educational opportunities for local people.

What has happened so far?

So far, the NDC has directly funded about 20 local projects under the 'Education Theme'. For more details about the current projects see Project List. They are all locally based and have been developed to help local people overcome barriers to learning, and to access a wide range of learning and training opportunities. For example, there are projects which focus on childcare training, including the Childminders Drop-in and the Trainee Nursery Workers Projects. Other projects focus on the involvement of the family in children’s education, such as Family Learning and Monson Parent and Under Fives. We also have projects which provide targeted support for pupils, including Attendance, Learning Mentors and the Primary Collaborative projects. Others focus on support for adults in accessing vocational training, such as Tap Into Learning and the 170 ICT Skills Training Centre.

What else is happening?

Education and training will be an important part of the NDC Centre development. The new building will include a state-of-the-art library, ICT centre and training space with on-site creche facilities. For more details of what the NDC centre will look like and what will be in it see Capital Programme.

Future plans

Many of the groups delivering the projects shown on this website are working towards sustaining their activities. For example, 170 Community Organisation is looking at how it will continue to deliver a wide range of training at the NDC Centre in partnership with Lewisham College. Aspects of other projects such as speech and language therapy and school-based mentoring programmes are moving towards being supported by mainstream funding.
