Crime and Community SafetyThe VisionThe vision for our Crime and Community Safety Theme is set out in our Delivery Plan as: 'In 2011, New Cross Gate will be a safer place to live work and learn, and people will have renewed confidence in their neighbourhood and in the services working to promote community safety. They will be empowered to ensure that those services work together to meet local needs.' What this means is that the NDC, working in partnership with local people and a wide range of service providers, will lower crime, anti-social behaviour, and enviro-crime in New Cross Gate, and will also reduce the fear of crime. Achieving the VisionWe are working with a wide range of partners in order to reduce crime and improve community safety. In particular, the NDC's Crime and Community Safety Theme works closely with local Safer Neighbourhood Partnership, made up of local residents, businesses, community and voluntary organisations, councillors, Tenants' and Residents' Association representatives, and the local police Safer Neighbourhood Team. This ensures that local people are central to work in the NDC area to improve community safety. What has happened so far?To date, the NDC has directly funded around 20 local projects under the Crime and Community Safety Theme, including projects to improve local lighting, install additional CCTV, recruit a team of Neighbourhood Wardens, provide local businesses with radios, and set up a multi-agency panel to support young people in difficult circumstances. What else is happening? It is an important time for the NDC's Crime and Community Safety Theme. This year we are undertaking a big review of our approach, which will result in several new projects being developed. New projects will include trialling restorative justice as a method of reducing crime and anti-social behaviour throughout New Cross Gate, a target hardening project to help victims of burglary and people who are worried about being burgled, youth inclusion projects, and anti-robbery projects. We will also be working with Crime Prevention Design Advisers and the NDC Capital Programme Team to ensure that new buildings and redevelopments in New Cross Gate make the local environment a much safer place to live, work and learn. Future plansA key part of what we are doing is to try and make sure that our projects – and/or the benefits they provide – are around long after the NDC programme finishes in March 2011. To this end, we are working with the Safer Neighbourhood Partnership to establish the group as a charity so that it can continue for the long term. We're also talking to a number of mainstream service providers about establishing a multi-agency, crime and community safety hub in New Cross Gate so that there are more agencies based in the area who have a better understanding of local people and issues. In addition, all of the projects we set up will be working out ways to sustain the benefits they provide for the long-term good of New Cross Gate. How to find out more or get involvedUltimately, the success of the NDC will depend on the ability of our projects and staff to engage local people, understand their situation, needs, and concerns, and work with them to solve problems. So if you'd like to help us make a difference, we'd like to hear from you.
